Make It A Habit--Drink Zero-Calorie Drinks

Are there extra calories in your drinks? It can be surprising to find out that some drinks can have as many calories as a full meal. Between the milkshakes, the juices, the trip to Starbucks…those extra calories can really add up; and if your goal is weight loss, then you may be wondering why all that extra work isn’t paying off.

The very best zero-calorie drink is, was and always will be---water. But for some (including me) ditching that milkshake for plain water with just a snap of the fingers just doesn’t sound like a good plan. But think of it as a progression. How about switching—just a few times a week at first—to low calorie milk alternatives such as almond milk.

There are always artificially sweetened drinks such as diet sodas that are zero calories. While this would fit the goal, there is some evidence that the increased sweetness of the artificial sweetener can increase your cravings for something sweet. Still more research is needed but just be aware of this and monitor your personal success with artificially sweetened drinks.

Carbonated water is becoming a more popular choice thanks to SodaStream. This is a good progression away from artificially sweetened drinks since carbonated water has no calories AND no artificial sweetener.

To be successful, start slowly. Perhaps at the beginning, replace one beverage at one meal every day. The next weeks, start picking entire days and only have no-calorie drinks on those days.

So let’s finish with some points to remember:

  • Beverages can have a surprisingly large amount of calories

  • Water is the best option

  • Start slowly and build from there.

What is your favourite low/no calorie drink?
